Declaration of Empowerment
“In the spirit of global empowerment and an end to violence against women and girls, Atlanta artist Paul Chelko established The Chelko Foundation. Honoring his late wife and inspiration Debbie, the Foundation provides scholarships and grants for deserving women in the arts.
Since 2007, The Foundation’s mission to empower women through art, education and partnership has provided support to numerous individuals and organizations whose efforts and acts emulate those goals.
In 2013, One Woman Rising was commissioned to commemorate Eve Ensler’s global call to action, One Billion Rising. The sculpture’s celebratory dance and upward movement speak to the joy of freedom for women and the realization of a life filled with greater creative expression.
Since her original placement on Freedom Park, One Woman Rising has become an internationally recognized symbol of women’s empowerment. Her inclusion into the City’s art collection is an outward and visible symbol of Atlanta’s commitment to the arts and universal empowerment.
Artists Phil Proctor, Scott Fray and Madelyn Greco led a team of talented individuals to create this lasting tribute to billions of women worldwide calling attention to their efforts to break from the bonds of oppression, discrimination and violence.
Paul Chelko once said, “Until women are free…no one is free”. It is in this spirit that we declare and dedicate One Woman Rising to the women and girls of the world that she should be forever a symbol of freedom and empowerment.”
